Written by footballfan on January 12th, 2010
If you watch the National Football League then you know, it’s a pretty dangerous, high contact sport that is likely to cause dozens of injuries per year. That’s probably the number one reason why having both second and third string players at each and every game is a huge necessity. But what other reasons are there for professional football teams to seek out good second stringers? Check out the score board and the NFL display easels of players and you’ll find out.
Seven good reasons why 2nd and 3rd stringers are vital the NFL.
1. As previously mentioned, injured starters is the main reason for second and third stringers.
2. If a player is doing badly during consecutive plays or consecutive games, coaches have the option to sit them out for a while until they regain their confidence.
3. If a player has done poorly all year they will most likely get canned and get replaced by a second-stringer. It happens more than they’d like.
4. Needless to say, third stringers are necessary when second stringers get injured. Hey, it happens.
5. If a player’s personal life gets in the way and they have to spend some time locked up, a second stringer can save the game. In Michael Vick’s case, his number two had to step it up for about two full seasons.
6. If a player has way too many personal fouls or simply cannot keep his head in the game, he’ll sit and his replacement will prosper.
7. And lastly, If your quarterback is too self absorbed or is simply way too old to do a team good, then the second stringer will definitely get their chance to shine. Aaron Rodgers over Brett Favre any day! Of course he learned from the best, but his record speaks for itself. In the words of Terry Bradshaw, this young quarterback is “poised beyond his years.”
