Mark Sanchez named Jets starting quarterback
Written by footballfan on August 27th, 2009
Rookie Mark Sanchez has been selected as the Jets’ starting quarterback for the 2009 season by Jets coach Rex Ryan. The fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft is the first rookie to open a season under center for the club. Kellen Clemens will be Sanchez’s backup.
Coach Rex Ryan announced Wednesday the former USC star would be under center when the Jets open the season Sept. 13 at Houston. The Jets’ next preseason games is Saturday night against the Giants.
The Jets had already seen enough talent from Sanchez, who signed a five year deal that could be worth up to $60 million, to make him their starter, despite the fact that he struggled a bit against the Baltimore Ravens in Monday night’s game. He completed just 3-of-8 passes for 43 yards with a impressing TD pass to running back Leon Washington, while Clemens was 5-of-10 for 60 yards with an interception returned for a touchdown and a TD pass.
Sanchez outplayed Kellen Clemens in camp and the preseason. So it would have been an upset if Kellen Clemens had claimed the job, with all the Jets have invested in Sanchez. He’s still a work in progress — as evidenced by his ups and downs in Monday’s preseason game — and the Jets figure to run plenty in 2009, so while his future seems bright, temper your expectations from a fantasy perspective early on.
Ryan was with Baltimore last season when the Ravens went with rookie Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback. Flacco was steady, starting all 16 games and completing 60 percent of his passes for nearly 3,000 yards. Ryan plans to make a new best rookie of Jets.
Well, let’s wait for Sanchez’s performance on the field. He is going to deliver.
