Former Dogfighter, NFL Star Michael Vick Free
Written by footballfan on July 21st, 2009
Suspended NFL star Michael Vick’s federal dogfighting sentence has ended, freeing him to lobby for a return to the field.
Vick’s attorney Lawrence Woodward said Vick was released from federal custody Monday at his home in Virginia. Vick had been under home confinement for the last two months of his 23-month sentence.
The federal Bureau of Prisons had listed Vick’s release date as Monday.
Freedom will allow Vick to step up his efforts to resume his pro football career. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said he will review Vick’s status after the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback completes his sentence.
If Vick is able to return to the NFL, it won’t be with Atlanta. The Falcons released Vick in June. A return to the league could depend on whether he learned from his experience. Everyone wants him to prove himself and see how he demonstrate his commitment through his deeds.
Vick has admitted that he got involved with dogfighting at 8 years old when he was living in project housing. This is the origin of his dogfighting.
At the NFL meetings in May, Goodell said: “Michael is going to have to demonstrate to myself and to the general public and to a lot of people: Did he learn anything from this experience? Does he regret what happened? Does he feel that he can be a positive influence going forward? Those are the questions that I would like to see when I sit with him.”
So the question remains, the one with which Goodell will be grappling:
Having paid his debt to society, Vick deserves to work. But does he deserve this work, an opportunity so many others would love to have?
